What is Plane Typing?

Plane Typing is a free airplane typing game where you pilot a little red propeller plane across a sunny sky. Golden rings float toward you in three sky lanes, each with a word on it. Type the word and the plane steers into that lane and flies straight through the ring. From level 2, grumpy storm clouds with their own words line up behind some rings; if one is in your lane, type its word to dodge out of the way. A ring that slips past or a storm that hits you costs one of three hearts. Every six words the level goes up, the sky scrolls faster and the words get longer, and the game tracks distance flown, words typed, accuracy and WPM.

Why this grade range?

Plane Typing suits 2nd grade through middle school because it asks for whole words at a pace that grows with the player. Level 1 uses two- to four-letter sky words like fly and wing, so a 7-year-old who knows the letters can keep the plane in the air. By level 7 the rings carry words like altitude and propeller and the storms say lightning and downpour, which is enough to push an 11- or 12-year-old. Deciding between a ring to fly through and a storm to dodge also trains kids to read the word before they type it. It pairs well with Keyboard Jump for more word practice and with Typing Race once speed is the goal.

Pro Tips for Plane Typing

  • 1

Watch the bar at the bottom of the screen. It always names the next word to type and tells you whether it is a ring to fly through or a storm to dodge.

  • 2

After you fly through a ring, look right behind it. A storm cloud in the same lane is the next thing you need to type.

  • 3

A wrong letter restarts the current word, so slow down a little on long words. Accuracy is shown live in the top bar.

  • 4

Keep your fingers on the home row between words. Later levels send rings faster, and the time you save not looking down is what keeps all three hearts.

Plane Typing — Frequently Asked Questions

    What is Plane Typing?
Plane Typing is a free browser typing game where you steer a small plane through golden rings by typing the word on each ring. It runs in any modern browser with a physical keyboard, with no download and no login.
How do the storm clouds work?
From level 2, some storm clouds follow a ring in the same lane. When a storm is heading into your plane's lane, type the word on the cloud and the plane dodges to another lane. If it reaches you first, you lose a heart. Storms in other lanes simply drift past.
What age is Plane Typing for?
It is built for ages 7-12, roughly 2nd through 6th grade. Words start at two to four letters and get longer every few levels, so younger and older kids both get a fair challenge.
Do I have to use capital letters?
No. Every word is lowercase and the game accepts either case, so kids never need to hold Shift while they fly.
    Is Plane Typing free?
Yes. Every game on TypingGamesKids is free, has no ads, needs no account, and stores nothing about your child.
Can a class play Plane Typing together?
Yes. A teacher can pick Plane Typing in Class Race, and every student's word count feeds the live classroom board, with no student accounts.
