What is Typing Puzzle?

Typing Puzzle is a free typing puzzle game for kids. A picture, such as a smiling whale or a rocket in space, is cut into real jigsaw pieces. Three loose pieces wait in a tray, each with a letter or a word on it. Type the first letter to pick a piece up, finish the word, and the piece flies into its spot on the board, where a glowing outline shows where it goes. Fill every spot to complete the picture and earn 50 bonus points. The first two puzzles have 6 pieces with single letters, then come 3-letter words, 9-piece boards with 4- to 6-letter words, and from the seventh puzzle 12-piece boards with long words. A clock counts down from 60 seconds, every placed piece adds a little time back, and a finished picture adds 5 seconds.

Why this grade range?

Typing Puzzle suits 1st through 5th grade because the first two puzzles only ask for single letters, so a 6-year-old who is still learning where the keys are can finish a picture, while the later puzzles bring long words like rainbow, elephant and waterfall that keep a 10- or 11-year-old busy. Kids choose which piece to place next, which gives younger players a sense of control, and a mistake costs one second instead of a life, so nobody is knocked out by one slip. Only letter keys are used and uppercase or lowercase both count. It pairs well with Typing Memory for word practice and with Plane Typing once speed is the goal.

Typing Puzzle is a calm pick from our typing games for 7 year olds and up, where every finished picture is a small reward for careful typing.

Pro Tips for Typing Puzzle

  • 1

You can pick any of the three pieces in the tray. Start with the shortest word or the letter you find fastest on the keyboard.

  • 2

Once a piece is picked up, its word plate turns purple and its spot on the board glows. Keep typing that word until it flies in.

  • 3

A wrong key never erases your word. It only takes 1 second off the clock, so slow down and get the next letter right instead of guessing.

  • 4

Watch the bar at the bottom of the screen. It lists the words in the tray, and once you start a word it shows the letters you still need.

Typing Puzzle — Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play Typing Puzzle?
Look at the three jigsaw pieces in the tray on the left. Type the first letter of any piece's word to pick it up, then type the rest of the word. When the word is done, the piece flies into its spot on the puzzle board. Fill every spot to finish the picture.
What happens if I press the wrong key?
The piece wiggles (or the whole tray, if no piece starts with that letter), the screen edge flashes red and the clock loses 1 second. The letters you already typed stay, so you just carry on with the right key. There are no lives to lose.
When does the game end?
When the clock reaches zero. You start with 60 seconds, every piece you place adds time back (longer words add more), and every finished picture adds 5 more seconds, up to 90 seconds on the clock.
Does Typing Puzzle get harder?
Yes. The first two puzzles have 6 pieces with single letters. Then the pieces get 3-letter words, the board grows to 9 pieces, the words grow to 4 and then 5 or 6 letters, and from the seventh puzzle the board has 12 pieces with words up to 10 letters.
What pictures are in the puzzles?
There are six original illustrations: Whale Bay, Fox Forest, Rocket Trip, Balloon Hills, Turtle Beach and Rainbow Castle. They come in a random order each game, and the cut lines change every time.
What age is Typing Puzzle for?
It is built for ages 6-11, roughly 1st through 5th grade. Younger kids can enjoy the letter puzzles, and older kids spend most of the game on the word puzzles.
Can a class play Typing Puzzle together?
Yes. A teacher can pick Typing Puzzle in Class Race, and every student's points feed the live classroom board, with no student accounts.
