What is Shark Typing Game?

The Shark Typing Game is a free typing game for kids that plays like red light, green light under the sea. You are a little striped fish and a big, friendly shark floats ahead with its back to you, humming. Every correct letter swims you one step closer; type every letter or word on the course to reach the shark's tail and tag it. Every few seconds a yellow "!" pops up and the shark starts to turn around, then it looks straight at you. While it is looking, don't press any key: if you type, the shark spots you, you lose one of three hearts and a bubble floats you back to the start of the letter or word you were on. Each tag starts a new level, from home-row letters to all 26 letters, then short sea words like fin and eel, then longer words like coral and whale, then long ones like dolphin and jellyfish. A game lasts 120 seconds.

How to Play Shark Typing Game

The Shark Typing Game plays like red light, green light under the sea. You are a small striped fish, and a round, smiling shark with no teeth floats ahead of you, humming with its back turned. Every correct letter swims your fish one step closer. Type every letter and word in the course and you reach its tail and tag it for 100 points. Watch the bar at the top. Green means the shark is humming and you can type. A yellow "!" over its head means it is about to turn, and typing is still safe for a moment. Red means it is looking at you: press any key now and it spots you, you lose one of your three hearts, and a bubble carries you back to the start of the letter or word you were typing. Three wrong keys on the same target make a splash that the shark hears, so it turns around sooner. From level 5 the shark sometimes fakes a turn. Levels go from home-row letters to the whole alphabet, then three-letter sea words, four- and five-letter words, and long words like dolphin and jellyfish. Each round lasts 120 seconds. Because the game rewards stopping on a signal as much as typing fast, it suits 1st to 5th graders who tend to mash keys. For another ocean game, try Word Bubbles; to check speed afterwards, take the typing test.

Why this grade range?

The Shark Typing Game fits 1st through 5th grade, about ages 6 to 12, because the first two levels ask for one letter at a time (home-row letters first, then the whole alphabet) and the later levels move to sea words of three letters, then four or five, then six to nine. A 1st grader can play the letter levels, while 4th and 5th graders reach the long-word levels where the shark warns for only about a second and sometimes fakes its turn. The stop-and-go rule practices something most typing games skip: controlled, deliberate key presses. Kids learn to finish a key cleanly and stop on a signal instead of mashing, and the splash rule means guessing makes the shark turn sooner. Each game runs on a 120-second clock, which suits a short slot in a lab lesson.

Our home page is built around making typing for kids fun, with every game sorted by grade so you can find the next one after the shark.

Pro Tips for Shark Typing Game

  • 1

Watch for the yellow "!" above the shark. That is your warning: finish the key you are pressing and take your hands off the keyboard before the shark turns all the way around.

  • 2

You do not lose letters by stopping. If the shark turns in the middle of a word, freeze, wait for it to hum again, and carry on from the same letter.

  • 3

Slow down instead of guessing. Three wrong keys on the same letter or word make a splash, and the shark hears it and turns around right away.

  • 4

A tag with no wrong keys and no spots on the way is a Sneaky tag and is worth 50 extra points on top of the 100 for the tag.

  • 5

From level 5 the shark sometimes fakes a turn and goes straight back to humming. If you stopped, no harm done; just start typing again when the bar at the top says SWIM.

Shark Typing Game — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Shark Typing Game?
It is a free browser typing game where you type letters and words to swim a little fish up behind a friendly shark and tag its tail. When the shark turns around to look, you have to stop typing until it turns back. It works in any modern browser with a physical keyboard, with no download and no login.
    Is the shark scary?
No. The shark is a round, smiling cartoon with no teeth that hums while it swims. If it spots you, it says "I SEE YOU!" and a bubble floats your fish back a little way. Nothing gets eaten.
What happens if I type while the shark is looking?
The shark spots you. You lose one of your three hearts and go back to the start of the letter or word you were typing. The letters and words you already finished on that course stay done. Lose all three hearts and the game ends early.
Which letters and words does it use?
Level 1 uses the home-row letters A, S, D, F, G, H, J, K and L. Level 2 uses all 26 letters. Level 3 has three-letter sea words such as sea, fin and ray, level 4 has words such as fish, reef, crab and coral, and level 5 has longer words such as turtle, dolphin and seahorse. From level 6 the words are mostly long ones and the shark fakes its turn more often.
    How long is a game?
Each game has a 120-second clock. The clock stops for the short celebration after each tag. The game ends when the time runs out or when you lose all three hearts.
Can a class play the Shark Typing Game together?
Yes. A teacher can pick it in Class Race, and each student's points feed the live classroom board, with no student accounts.
