What is Ghost Typing?

Ghost Typing is a free ghost typing game where friendly ghosts drift toward a lantern at the bottom of a moonlit graveyard, each one carrying a word. Press the first letter of a word to lock on to that ghost, finish the word, and the ghost is sent home in a puff of wisps. Let one reach the lantern and it costs a heart; lose all three hearts and the night ends. Ghosts arrive in waves of six that get faster and use longer words, so the game grows with the player instead of staying at one speed.

How to Play Ghost Typing

Ghost Typing takes place in a moonlit graveyard. A lantern glows at the bottom of the screen, and friendly ghosts float in from the left and right sides toward it, each one carrying a word. Type a ghost's word and it drifts up and fades away, sent home. The word of the ghost nearest the lantern is also shown in a strip along the bottom. The first letter you press locks onto the closest ghost whose word starts with that letter, and you finish that word before moving on. A wrong key breaks the lock: that ghost's word goes back to its first letter and your accuracy drops. You have three hearts, and each ghost that reaches the lantern takes one. There is no timer. Ghosts arrive in waves of six. Waves 1 and 2 use short words like boo, owl and moon, waves 3 to 5 bring ghost, candle and whisper, and from wave 6 come words like graveyard, flickering and haunted house, which needs the space bar. Each wave, the ghosts float a little faster and arrive closer together. The end screen shows ghosts sent home, the wave reached, accuracy and words per minute. Ghost Typing suits 2nd through 5th graders, and it is an easy pick for October. Kids who regularly get past wave 6 are ready for the zombie wave survival game, which uses the same first-letter lock-on with harder words. For word practice with a climb instead of a lantern to defend, try jumping up the canyon ledges.

Why this grade range?

Ghost Typing suits 2nd through 5th grade because it combines whole-word typing with choosing a target — a step up from games where the next word is handed to you. Kids have to read several words at once, decide which ghost matters most, and then type it without looking down. Waves 1 and 2 use three- and four-letter words so a 7-year-old can start; by wave 6 the words are long enough to challenge a 12-year-old. It pairs naturally with Zombie Survival for older kids and with Word Bubbles for those still building word fluency.

Pro Tips for Ghost Typing

  • 1

Deal with the ghost closest to the lantern first — the bottom bar always names it for you.

  • 2

The first letter picks your target, so look before you press. Starting the wrong word drops your lock and costs accuracy.

  • 3

Keep your hands on the home row between ghosts. Reaching back and forth is what lets a wave sneak past you.

  • 4

From wave 6 a ghost can carry the two-word phrase haunted house. Type the space in it like any other key.
